Your guide to choosing the right cake

May 21, 2019

At Bake My Day, we have a veritable wonderland of diverse and delicious cake varieties. It can therefore sometimes be a bit difficult to know which kind to choose.

This article will guide you through your options, making it easier for you to choose the cake that suits you perfectly.

Some people want their cake moist and sweet with caramel or chocolate, while others prefer a less sweet cake with a twist of fruity flavour. Therefore, we try to have a little bit of everything to satisfy everyone.

The best way to find your cake variety is by ordering some samples via our shop. Try a couple, and you're sure to find the variety that best suits your taste buds. We offer two Luxury sample boxes, the regular and the vegan.

In our shop, you can find a whole page dedicated to samples! As you can also see on our price list, we have six different types of cake layers. Furthermore, we have fillings with 10 different flavour options, which come in the form of either cream or mousse, depending on the type of cake you choose.

Last but not least, we have 10 different types of toppings. So, if you want a little crunch on top, several different flavour varieties, or a little extra freshness, you can add toppings to the cake as needed.

This gives you many choices, so we don't blame you if it takes a little while to decide.

Cake Layers:

Chocolate or Vanilla Cake

We start from the bottom with the cake layers. Our most popular flavour is not surprisingly chocolate, but that may also have something to do with the price. Chocolate and vanilla cakes are our cheapest cakes, but of course, that doesn't mean we compromise on quality – the taste is still heavenly!

These cakes are more in the style of English cakes; moist, sweet, and with thick layers of cake typically filled with buttercream. However, there is also the option of a cream made from cream cheese or a vegan buttercream. We often recommend these flavour variations for children's birthdays, family parties, and similar events, but some of our customers have actually also chosen them as their wedding cake. So there are no event limitations - who doesn't love chocolate?

The most used flavour combinations are chocolate or vanilla cake with vanilla cream, but if you want to go a little outside the box, we recommend combining the chocolate cake with a delicate raspberry cream or the vanilla cake with a fresh passion fruit cream. You can also add a little salted caramel to the chocolate cake or perhaps even pecans to the vanilla cake if you really want to go all out.

Briefly about the cake:

· Save money

· Sweet and moist

· Simple and child-friendly

· Option for a "semi-naked" design

· Vegan if you choose vegan buttercream

· Lasts for several days after your event if stored correctly

Red Velvet Cake

If you prefer something less sweet but still a simpler taste, you should try our Red Velvet cake. Just as the name indicates, this cake has a velvety texture that is soft as silk and delightfully airy.

The cake's flavour is a mixture of cocoa, vanilla beans, and vinegar. Yes, it may sound a bit strange, but they just go perfectly together.

It is typically layered with a cream cheese frosting that contains a hint of lemon, but of course, you can also get one of our buttercream varieties.

Our most popular flavour combinations are with cream cheese frosting topped with fresh berries. The Red Velvet cake is one of our most popular varieties for weddings.

The cake in short:

- Not too sweet

- Simple and delicate

- Exotic design with the inviting red colour

- Suitable for both small and large events

French Chocolate Cake with Salted Caramel

The French variant of the chocolate cake is a dense cake with very little air. You could say it's the "richest" of all chocolate cakes – it contains a lot of dark chocolate. It's soft as silk and slightly underbaked on the inside, but becomes thicker in consistency as you move towards the outer edges.

A small warning; you must be a chocolate lover. If you are, then this is the perfect cake for your wedding. It's heavy, melts in your mouth, and pairs perfectly with a nice hot cup of coffee. It is undoubtedly one of our most popular cakes, especially when topped with salted caramel, walnuts, and vanilla cream. The walnuts complement the cake's natural sweetness and add a delightful crunchy effect to the cake.

If you want to tone down the sweetness a bit, we recommend adding coffee flavour to the cream. Fresh berries also go really well, but to be honest, fresh fruit goes with almost all desserts, doesn't it?

The cake in short:

- Lots of chocolate

- Gourmet cake that melts in your mouth

- Popular for weddings and baptisms

- Quite sweet, so walnuts are perfect as a topping

- Low gluten content (has a little flour in it)

Light and Airy Vanilla Cake with Mousse

These are the cakes that most resemble the Danish layer cake. They are light, airy, spongy, divided into thin layers, typically four to six per tier, and covered with a delicious mousse. The mousse is available in a wide range of flavours: raspberry, passion fruit, strawberry, mango, lemon, milk chocolate, caramel, white chocolate, or vanilla. You can choose between one or two types of mousse, but if you choose two, it costs +5 DKK per person or a minimum of 100 DKK extra, depending on the size of the cake.

This cake is also popular for weddings and baptisms, as well as among those who simply prefer the Danish layer cake style. The fruit flavour options are light and fresh, and if you want both sweetness and freshness in the cake, you can, for example, choose a light vanilla cake with passion fruit and white chocolate mousse or with a combination of raspberry and milk chocolate mousse.

The cake in short:

- Resembles the Danish layer cake

- Light, airy, and spongy

- Mousse (made with cream and gelatine)

- Fresh, if you add fruit flavour

- Thin layers

Cream Layers:

Buttercream

Heavy foam made from two key ingredients: butter and sugar.

The standard version has a vanilla bean flavour, but we can also make it with raspberry, lemon, chocolate, passion fruit, strawberry, banana, Oreo, coffee, and caramel.

Vegan Buttercream

For those who don't care for heavy buttercream, we recommend trying our vegan version. The texture is lighter and melts in your mouth. It pairs perfectly with fruity flavours, allowing the acidity to shine through. This cream is our personal preference, but it entirely depends on the texture you prefer.

Cream Cheese Frosting

This is a less sweet filling option, as cream cheese has a natural tartness, and we add a small hint of lemon to give the flavour a bit of extra bite.

Mousse

Made with cream and gelatine, so this variant is not halal or suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Mousse is the most popular type of filling in Denmark, and ours strikes the perfect balance between soft, airy, and creamy. We have mousse in chocolate, white chocolate, caramel, raspberry, passion fruit, and lemon.

Raspberry or Chocolate Ganache

New filling varieties are on their way, and they will be lactose-free – YAY!

Toppings

If you want a more complex flavour in your cake, you can add toppings that suit your preferences. Toppings cost +5 DKK per person, and you naturally have the option to choose several varieties to create a true gourmet cake packed with a rainbow of different taste experiences.

Varieties:

- Fresh berries (vegan)

- Walnuts (vegan)

- Salted caramel (vegan)

- Chocolate pieces of white, dark, or milk chocolate (white and dark varieties available vegan)

- Marzipan (vegan)

- Pecans (vegan)

- Nougat (vegan)

- Dried raspberries and blueberries (vegan)

- Meringue pieces (available vegan)

Samples

We always recommend ordering some samples before placing the final cake order, as not everyone has the same preferences. So while one person might say it's the best cake they've ever tasted, another might not find it so special. So try a few of the flavour varieties.

Especially if it's a large cake you're ordering, it can't hurt to order a few slices first – just to make sure the large cake has exactly the right taste for you.
